Bravo. It’s true. So much of what’s hard about living on the front lines of environmental destruction here in Borneo is witnessing the appalling ugliness that follows–the felled trees, the trash, the stretches of sharp invasive grass or smoking ash where there was formerly a magnificent forest.
As you said, we’re conditioned to judge nature based on its utility to us, and we sense that complaining about ugliness won’t hold up against cold facts about monetary gain. But if that’s the case, it’s because we’ve become spiritually blind.
