Rabbi Ascherman was chair of Rabbis for Human Rights for many years, then founded a new activist organization, Torat Tzedeck-- the Torah of Justice, and has been championing the rights of Bedouin and other Palestinians in the West Bank by actually going there, day after day, whenever they call him to witness or stop Israelis from appropriating the places where they grow their food. He has been physically attacked by settlers, and his pleas to the Israeli army and police to stop illegal activities of Israeli settlers have mostly been ignored. How to Be an Activist

At a time when demonizing those who are not yet with us is commonplace and the political discourse is becoming more polarized, widening the political gap, insisting on seeing the humanity of others even when you despise their behavior, is a radical political act. Become curious. Ask not what is wrong with someone you don't agree with, but rather what is driving them to support policies that are so hurtful to others.
