Tikkun Wins 2015 Magazine of the Year Award

Tikkun is the proud first-place winner of the "Magazine of the Year: Overall Excellence in Religion Coverage" award from the Religion Newswriters Association for the second year in a row! The Religion Newswriters Association is the US journalism association for publications that cover issues pertaining to religion and spirituality.

Tikkun editor Rabbi Michael Lerner traveled to Philadelphia to accept the award at the annual RNA convention.

Incest and rape are words that never fully capture the horrifying and lasting imprint that these experiences leave on minds, bodies, psyches, and spirits both of those who have survived and the many others who have not. I fully credit the work of many unknown and known courageous racially/ethnically diverse women who began the second wave of this movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s for their tireless organizing and activist efforts in placing ending violence against women and children at the forefront of local, state, and national agendas. Even with the tremendous progress and inroads made, the racist and sexist stereotype that Black women and girls are incapable of being raped or otherwise physically or sexually assaulted still prevails.

How to Be an Activist

At a time when demonizing those who are not yet with us is commonplace and the political discourse is becoming more polarized, widening the political gap, insisting on seeing the humanity of others even when you despise their behavior, is a radical political act. Become curious. Ask not what is wrong with someone you don't agree with, but rather what is driving them to support policies that are so hurtful to others.
