High Holidays with Beyt Tikkun 2021

Rosh Hashanah | September 6-8th
Yom Kippur | September 15-16th

The central message of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur:

We can heal, repair, and transform ourselves, our society, and the life support system of planet earth. But we need to act quickly and decisively.

We do this in our tradition by focusing on three components: Teshuva (repentance), Tzedakah (social justice), and T’fillah (prayer). We will create sacred high holy day experiences that allow us to do the deep inner work and reparation needed to return to our highest selves while also following the traditional prayers and Torah readings. We will explore what changes and reparations are needed in our world and make commitments to participate in efforts to manifest those changes so we are partners in the ongoing evolution of the universe towards love. We will send you guidelines for steps you can take at home between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. All of this will be held in the container of meaningful prayer experiences which will touch our hearts and souls.

Besides our inner transformation, we will also address:

– The Environmental Crisis
– Reparations for slavery
– Overcoming the Selfishness intrinsic to the competitive marketplace
– The attempts to dismantle democracy in the U.S. and many other countries
– Israel’s treatment of Palestinians

The Hasidim taught that in difficult times like these we must let our joy fill the air, and insisted that the High Holy Days must be filled with music, dance, and love. You’ll find this energy at Beyt Tikkun services!!!

We’d love to have you join us.

Ami Goodman will provide musical guidance. Cat Zavis will lead an exercise where we can express our anger, frustration, and grief and also reconnect to our hope and vision of the possibility of a transformed and healed world. Rabbi Lerner will lead us into a deep exploration of who and what God is, present a theology that challenges the simplistic views of God, how to make prayer meaningful, and how to cultivate a life of awe and wonder while participating in struggles for social justice.

Please register now. Rosh Hashanah will be here before you know it! It begins Monday night September 6th, the last night of Labor Day weekend. (We won’t be able to help you that weekend, so you need to register before then.)

Guest Teachers on Zoom will Include:

To pray is to take notice of the wonder, to regain the sense of mystery that animates all beings . . .  Prayer is our humble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living.

Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism, falsehoods. A liturgical movement must become a revolutionary movement seeking to overthrow the forces that destroy the promise, the hope, the vision.

– Abraham Joshua Heschel

We are living in very difficult times. The pandemic continues to create uncertainty in our lives. The conviction of George Floyd’s murderer has not yet brought about the deep structural changes needed. Instead, reactionary governments in many states in the U.S. have been passing laws to ensure that many people, mostly people of color, will find it harder or impossible to vote in the coming elections in 2022 and beyond. States are passing laws prohibiting the teaching of the history of slavery and racism under the guise that it will make students feel bad about themselves and the country. Hatred of Jews has been spreading on social media and in violent actions against Jews in the US and Europe. Right-wing Jews have blamed this on the Left and Jewish progressives for criticizing Israel rather than acknowledging that most of the hatred is being spread by right-wing organizations. Meanwhile, environmental destruction continues to accelerate and governments are taking partial steps without dismantling the largest polluters, including the military-industrial complex and large corporations. During our services, we will also pray for the Afghani people as they face the consequences of the U.S. invasion 20 years ago and the messy and poorly prepared withdrawal leaving many vulnerable and many refugees, as well as for all the people in the US and around the world who are suffering from the pandemic and are or will soon be suffering from the growing environmental crisis.

Money is not our bottom line. We believe every institution and social practice (including our economy, political system, legal system, educational system, cultural systems) should be judged efficient, rational, and productive not to the extent that they maximize money and power (the capitalist Old Bottom Line) but rather by our New Bottom Line: the extent to which they maximize our capacities to be loving and generous, kind and empathic, actively supporting environmental sanity and social justice, uprooting racism in all its forms, capable of treating others as a manifestation of the holy (and not valuable solely to the extent that they meet our needs), and responding to the universe with awe, wonder, and radical amazement.

  1. I am looking forward to meditation and reflection among a community of like-minded, concerned citizens.

  2. Oh, my goodness! I forgot to register for Rosh Hashona zoom services and it’s Fri. night, Sept. 3 now, so I guess it’s too late. Silvio wanted to attend on my computer too. Boo! Hoo! I will do it for Yom Kippur.

  3. I thank you for this . We are receiving only tiny bits of truth and we all need to be aware of how we all need to repent and forgive.

  4. I registered and paid but but have received no zoom links or materials. Please help.

  5. I paid and have been unable to find a registration or zoom link. Please could you make this easier to find or receive in future. I am appalled that I have been given no links or materials. 🙁
