High Holidays with Beyt Tikkun 2022 (on Zoom)

Rosh Hashanah | September 25-27th on Zoom
Yom Kippur | October 4-5th
 on Zoom

The central message of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur:

We can heal, repair, and transform ourselves, our society, and the life support system of planet earth.

The High Holidays offer us a time for deep, honest self-reflection. In what ways have we manifested our highest spiritual selves, both in our personal lives and in working to build a society which embodies justice, love, caring for the stranger, the powerless, the poor, the hungry, homeless, refugees, and those seeking to be respected and cared for?  What have we done to protect the life-support system of the planet?  Did we join with others who sought to make fundamental changes in the systems which reward selfishness and cynicism? The High Holy Days offer a structure for this self-reflection so we can become more fully embodied sparks of divine light and love. It requires that we actually engage in teshuva, transformation, and change. We are called to take responsibility for the ways in which we have treated others in less than kind ways, whether in our actions towards other individuals or in the ways in which we engage in our larger society. Where did we miss the mark and what can we do differently going forward?

Cat Zavis, Rabbi Michael Lerner, and Ami Goodman will lead us through much of the traditional high holiday prayers. And they will share reflections on God, and the connection between Jewish theology and the pressing political, social, and economic issues of our time. Ami Goodman will provide musical inspiration.

Guest Teachers on Zoom will Include:

Bill McKibben

Founder of 350.org | Environmental Activist

Letty Cottin Pogrebin

Founding Editor of Ms. Magazine

Noam Chomsky

Linguist & Social Theorist

Cecelia Wambach

President/Co-Founder of REAL (Refugee Education And Learning)

Besides our inner transformation, we will also address:

  • The Accelerating Environmental Crisis
  • The Real Danger of Nuclear War
  • Increasing Poverty & Homelessness
  • The Criminalizing of Abortion
  • Capitalism & Selfishness
  • Israeli Assault on Palestinians
  • The Growth of Fascism and Hatred of Jews

The Hasidim taught that in difficult times like these we must let our joy fill the air, and insisted that the High Holy Days must be filled with music, dance, and love. You’ll find this energy at Beyt Tikkun services!!!

We’d love to have you join us.

Please register now. Rosh Hashanah will be here before you know it! It begins Sunday night September 25th.

Beyt Tikkun is inspired by the prophetic teachings of Abraham Joshua Heschel:

To pray is to take notice of the wonder, to regain the sense of mystery that animates all beings . . .
Prayer is our humble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living.

Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism, falsehoods. A liturgical movement must become a revolutionary movement seeking to overthrow the forces that destroy the promise, the hope, the vision.

- Abraham Joshua Heschel

Money is not our bottom line. We believe every institution and social practice (including our economy, political, legal, educational, and cultural systems) should be judged efficient, rational, and productive not to the extent that they maximize money and power (the capitalist Old Bottom Line). Our approach is a New Bottom Line: the extent to which they maximize our capacities to be loving and generous, kind and empathic, actively supporting environmental sanity and social justice, uprooting racism in all its forms, capable of treating others as a manifestation of the holy (and not valuable solely to the extent that they meet our needs), and responding to the universe with awe, wonder, and radical amazement.

We will send you the Zoom link, and a PDF of our Machzor (High Holiday prayerbook in Hebrew and English), and a few days before Rosh Hashana we will send a guide to doing personal teshuva/societal transformation work. Please make your donation and register before then. This year we do not have separate prices for attending only one or two services (of course you can join us for any part of the services you wish). The more services you attend and the more you engage in the teshuva process in the workbook we send you, the deeper and richer your experience will be.
