Jan Garrett is an active member of his Unitarian Universalist Church in Bowling Green KY, a member of the Network of Spiritual Progressives, and a professor of philosophy in the Philosophy and Religion Department at Western Kentucky University. A lifelong “contrarian,” he participated in various capacities in the antiwar, social justice, and environmental movements of the 1960s and early 1970s. Long an advocate of prophetic spirituality in his congregation, he discovered a few years ago Abraham Joshua Heschel’s book on the prophets, which became a sort of “gateway” to radical Jewish spirituality and thence to Tikkun. But he has been haunted for decades by the saying attributed to Rabbi Tarfon, “it is not up to you to complete the task, nor are you free to desist from it.”
