Yes, but HOW? I am a clanging ass & gong show--though I speak in tons
of angles and move mountains with my faith--I find I am without the love
to love my enemies: would that I could, it's just not in me, damnit.
I'm damaged N damaging: I admit it. Besides: what would we do
without the Hitchens etc to throw our scones at? & be turning
nether cheeks at? I'm just asking.

Bad news: atheist Hitchens is dying.

You all know the low survival statistics, but the good news is that September 20, 2010, is officially designated as "Everybody Pray for Hitchens Day."

Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and please pray that Hitchens sees the light and turns his life around soon -- before it's too late!

Watch the "Everybody Pray for Hitchens Day" video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGckRdtYdmc

"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;"

- Matthew 5:44

LET US REASON TOGETHER

HUMAN NEED FOR RELIGION (GOD)
Most humans seem to have an internal need for the supernatural or god to exist. It has been suggested that the need has been developed over time by the survivor factor of evolution.

Spirituality - belief in God - has been described as search for - direction - certainty - meaning- purpose for living and - living in a safe common community (tribe) - nearly 90% of humans show this internal need.

The result of this search is a great assortment of religious/spiritual teachings and traditions.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

THE UNIVERSE - AND THE SIZE OF HUMAN BRAINS
Current science has determined that:
Universe is about 13 plus Billion years old
Our Sun and earth is some 5 Billion years old
"Man" is only some 2-3 million years old
Earliest known writing ( evidence of thinking) is only 5500 years old

Compare Our Short History and Brain Capacity With The Following =

An amoeba declaring to a fellow amoeba in a Petri dish :

"Let me tell you about the guy in the white lab coat"'

What evidence, understanding, or knowledge can an amoeba brain have about the guy in the white lab coat ?

(While there may be self aware creative intelligence - there is no real evidence to support that claim )

The Kitchens/Malcolm X analogy is not very helpful. Malcolm X came from a position of crippling financial and political deprivation, and so did most people he represented; Kitchens, although he came from a blue collar background, has enjoyed an elite education and high social status. Malcolm risked (and lost) his life for his stands; Kitchens risks very little. Malcolm X abstained from strong drink: Kitchens not at all. Being an atheist in America may make you unpopular and it might be a bar to public office, but certainly there are few other hazards involved.

Yes, both men were/are at times driven by rage, but I would argue that Kitchens has very little on the line besides his ego. I think of his atheism almost as sport, dripping with disdain at anyone who embraces any religion. Chris Hedges has made the point that the new atheists really don't know much about the broad spectrum of religion and that outside the religious right, few people hold to the faith they attack.

Dear BE: This is pretty oblique, I'm afraid ("tell all the truth but tell it slant" says Emily D) but you know me: always looking for a point of view not stuck inside the opposition. Reading your posts for the past
month has been challenging, provoking. One the one hand, very smart people castigating "religion"
(as it were some alien virus from beyond, damnit: affecting the population.) And then on the other hand:
very smart people defending it. And lots of hate/love wonderful wrastling between the 2 incommensurate
values systems. Always looking for the Pox on Both Houses perspective--but not to shut IT down. Heavens no. "Without Contraries is No Progress says Blake. And we all know that's true.

Here's a bit of trivia sparked by your posts and the Face Book fulminations and pontifications
I see and participate in.

Pots & Kettles

Getting-IT-on over the
    "black" issue.

Yr black, damnit!.
No, you are!
etc.

More sophisticated than
that, sure: hyped up to
global positioning and
reasons-why explaining
& blaming oil spills and
middle east crises, un-
employment &world
hunger.

The blackness.

For whom do you root?
Cheer lead? Pots or
Kettles?

Just Vote. Free willy/nilly.

My "God", I am SHOCKED... SHOCKED by Hitchen's unloving and not-nice insults against various souls of such deep and uplifting integrity, like Ronald Reagen. SHOCKED, I say...What is the world coming too!? There is just so much hate around. To counter that hate, I think we should, like, all hold hands and pray for Hitchens; and after doing that, we should all hug and massage each other`s shoulders to get the prana going...That would be so neat. Spread our good vibes to this fallen world...

Ah yes, Malcolm X: "We are non-violent with those who are non-violent with us, but we are NOT non-violent with those who are violent with us.."

Marco (PS: I need love so badly; can someone pray for me , please? My soul hurts. I think there is something wrong with me...There`s a disturbance there that I can't fathom..)

You may be interested to know that your logic conforms to Kant's classic requirements for doing good. Not only must the act be good, the motivation for it must also be good in order to satisfy Kant. Perhaps that explains why his ethics goes no where. It is an ethics for saints. I suspect yours is whatever can be concocted to make religious behavior look bad.
