I just saw your response, too late to reply. I've been thinking about Needham for a while anyway, because I wondered if he might have been an influence on Tolkien's alchemical themes. (Turns out Science and Civilization was too late (published the same year as The Lord of the Rings), though Needham's earlier Chinese Science from 1945 remains a possibility - clearly, further research is indicated!
