Land seizure is theft period even when taken in the heat of battle. The land in question which was won in battle no longer remained accessible to returning refugees. Is that not theft? My father was twice a refugee when his family fled the shelling of his village in Poland during WWI. Each time they were able to return to their home no matter who was in charge -- whether it be Austrian or Russian troops. For many Arab Israelis in the northern part of Israel this was not possible. The IDF and settlers prevented their return. Why would land acquired in the heat of battle not be theft when such land is seized by force and its inhabitants prevented from inhabiting their homes?

I certainly agree that Magnes, Buber and the others who were purged or silenced by the Zionist Congresses have regained their credibility. I do not agree that the lands taken in the heat of battle in 1948 constitute criminal conduct -- though if a credible inquiry were to conclude otherwise I would revise my opinion. This may well be a Canadian difference, actually: Zionism has been a Canadian Jewish reality since the 19th century and announcing you are not a Zionist in this country is looking for trouble.
