Liberal Saints

A nice coincidence that the Unitarian magazine UU World is featuring a church that has a series of portraits of liberal saints (such as Gandhi, at right), just at the same time that Tikkun is featuring a different one. Both sets of saints include people from other religious traditions. The Christian one in San Francisco by Mark Dukes is a much larger project and so includes a wider range. The difference is styles is striking.

This is beautiful, meaningful art. Thank you so much for presenting it here. I’m looking forward to the inclusion of more gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender saints, too.
It’s important to note the name of the artist along with their images. By following your links, I learned that the glorious saints on this post were done by Andrene Kauffman.
Thank you, Kittredge. I definitely should have named the artist. If you follow the other link in this post, to the saints painted by Mark Dukes, you’ll see that the Roman soldier in the top photo is a Christian saint who was one of a male couple, both pictured in that church, who were both lovers and Christian martyrs. And the article you wrote for us with Christian images that portrayed GLBT love can be seen in pdf at http://www.tikkun.org/fmd/files/march_2008_complete.pdf. That article will soon be available again on its own online.
