What Happened?

Expecting to lose the midterm elections, the Bush administration has abandoned its 'stay the course' stance on Iraq.

As reported everywhere , the Bush administration yesterday performed an astounding u-turn. In the face of overwhelming evidence of failure it dropped its central election-year message on the war in Iraq. As much as anything this should tell us that the President now expects to lose the midterm elections, and is beginning early a process of changing tack in the middle east which would otherwise have waited until after November 7th. And that is good news.

What happened? Press Secretary Tony Snow was asked by a journalist if there was a change in the administration "stay the course" policy? The question followed a remark from Dan Bartlett, a Whitehouse official, disavowing the approach. Snow's response - astonishingly - was to deny that "stay the course" had ever been the President's policy in the first place. And certainly it wasn't the policy now.
