THE GREATEST STORY OVERSOLD: UNDERSTANDING ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION
Stan G. Duncan
Orbis Books, 2010
While Stan Duncan provides an elegant summary of all the reasons that economic globalization has been bad for the people it has supposedly helped, he is not against globalization itself. Rather, as he puts it, “the philosophy and practice of our particular model of globalization disregard such values as the development of democracy, civil society, the equality of all human beings, and the protection of the environment.” After telling in painful yet evocative stories the details of how very bad our form of globalization continues to be for the people of our planet and for the planet itself, Duncan then goes to the Bible and shows how the religious community can learn from its own wisdom why and how to resist. This is a fine example of spiritual progressive consciousness applied to contemporary economic realities. For a renewed sense of hope, read this book alongside Peacebuilding.
