Chris Hedges warns of the power of the corporate state, analyzes why the Democrats are gettng what they deserve, and calls for a new kind of movement that abandons electoral politics entirely. "The democratic system, and the liberal institutions which once made piecemeal reform possible, is dead." Hedges' position, while based on considerable evidence, seems too bleak for us at Tikkun, yet it speaks to an important set of truths that must accompany any serious political strategy in the period ahead. Unfortunately, Hedges does not embrace the Global Marshall Plan, the Environmental and Social Responsibility Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, or any other such measure capable of articulating a progressive positive vision.
