Tikkun - to heal, repair and transform the world

WHAT IS THE TIKKUN CAMPUS NETWORK?

The Tikkun Campus Network (TCN) is a national network of progressive activism campus groups that are motivated by both a spiritual and political consciousness.   The TCN seeks to reconnect social, economic, and environmental change movements to the fundamental, inner movement of greater compassion, generosity, love, and joyful celebration.  Additionally, the Tikkun Campus Network affirms the value of all life, and seeks to foster an ethos of non-violence.

Activism finds its natural home on campuses.  Student activism makes a significant difference in building a world of peace and justice, while campus faculty and staff shape and challenge contemporary thinking.  Successful social movements such as the civil rights and women’s movements have shown us the vital importance of campus activism in achieving lasting social change.  We believe that the support of community and the building of national networks strengthen campus activism.

Structure of the Tikkun Campus Network

Tikkun Campus Group

The local branches of Tikkun
(“make a link to Tikkun at Your school Page”).  Real social change begins at the grassroots level.  Local groups provide a space for relationship building, education, and action planning.

Positions.  A useful structure may include a:

•    Leader: the person who starts the group.
•    Facilitator: the person who runs the meetings.  Hopefully this will be a rotating position.
•    Representative: the person who keeps in touch with the national office in Berkeley and may be an official representative to the National Coordinating Committee.  At first this may also be the leader.

Workgroups.  As your group grows, issues and tasks may be divided into workgroups, such as education, media, event organizing, relationship building, networking and legislative outreach.

Network

Website, Listserve (make “listserve” a link to liste serve”), and Blog (make “Blog” a link to the blog on the website”).  The Tikkun Campus Network website provides useful information for starting and running a local campus groups as well as connecting to others.  We have set up a list serve in which TCN members can communicate with each other in an easy and accessible way.  We envision the list serve as a space for posting comments, asking and answering questions, giving advice, and planning inter-campus actions.  The website will also have a blog (moderated by the National Organizer) that will post upcoming events and other current and useful information.

National Coordinating Committee.  This body leads the campus network and is comprised of rotating representatives from each campus.  As the network grows, regional representation may replace campus representation.  The National Coordinating Committee has yet to be officially developed, but we foresee that it will have several different roles and functions:

•    Communicate with the Tikkun national office.
•    Facilitate communication and community building among campuses.
•    Make decisions regarding nationwide actions, teach-ins and media campaigns.
•    Build coalitions and networks with other national groups that are engaged in similar work.
•    Decide network structure, focus, and resources.

Tikkun Community.  This group is comprised of local Tikkun chapters that exist throughout the United States and organize outside of campuses.  It is a large and growing national, grassroots organization that will be a great resource and support system in planning local and national events.  As part of the Tikkun Campus Network, we encourage you to connect with your local Tikkun Community group.

TCN Organizers and the National Office.

The national TCN organizers work in the central office in Berkeley.  They travel to campuses to speak with students and faculty in order to spread the Tikkun vision, strengthen already existing chapters, and help start new groups.  They are your connection to the national office and are there for individual TÇN members and groups to request help, resources, and advice.
